ACKLEY

Population, 1,750. Settled in 1865, is located on the M. & St. L. Ry., and on the Illinois Central R. R. (depots mile apart), in Etna township, Hardin County, 16 miles north of Eldora, the county seat, and 92 northeast of Des Moines. Has asphalt paved streets, 6 churches, has excellent public and high school system, the Sacred Heart Academy, municipally owned electric light, water works, fire department, 3 banks and an excellent newspaper, The World-Journal. Ships live stock, grain, butter, eggs and produce. Exp., Adams and Am. Telegraph and telephone facilitics. George F. Althouse, postmaster.

ALDEN

Population, 900. An incorporated town located on the Iowa river and on the Ill. Central and C. & N W Rys, (depots 19 miles apart), in Alden township, Hardin county, 21 miles northwest of Eldora, the county seat, and 75 from Des Moines. Was first settled in 1850. ELDORA

Population, 2,750. The judicial seat of Hardin county, is an incorporated city located on high table land 1 mile from the Iowa river, and on the M. & St. L and C. & N. W. Rys, (depots 1 mile apart). 27 miles northeast of Marshalltown and 80 northeast of Des Moines, it is lighted by electricity, has water works, a thoroughly organized fire department, excellent sewerage, a park covering 15 acres, churches of the Baptist, Catholic, Christian, Congregational, German Lutheran and Methodist denominations, a fine public school system, a public library, an up-to-date hospital, 5 banks, brick, tile and sewer pipe works, foundry, gasoline engine works, grist mill, bottling works, planing mill, etc. Two weekly newspapers, the Ledger and the Herald, are published. The Iowa Industrial School for Boys is located 14 miles west. Fire clay, brick clay and an excellent quality of building stone in inexhaustible quantities can be had within a mile of Eldora, and situated as it is in the heart of one of the finest agricultural and stock raising sections of the State, it is a most desirable location for manufacturers and business men.
